To take part in the Startupper of the Year by Total Challenge, you must first register at your country’s Challenge website.

Click the “Sign up” button at the top right of the website.

Create an account by filling out your first and last names, email address and password. Don’t forget to agree to the website’s terms of service. After registering, you will receive an email asking you to confirm your account.

Click your profile at the top right of your country’s Challenge website.

In “Settings,” select “Delete my profile.” An alert message will ask you whether you want to continue. Click “Delete” to confirm.

Click “Login” at the top right of your country’s Challenge website, then “Forgot your password?” Enter the email address you used to create your account. We will send you an email with instructions on how to reset your password.

To take part in the Startupper of the Year by Total Challenge, you must first register on your country’s Challenge website (see the “How do I register?” section).

Once you’ve logged in, click “Enter.” Fill out your project name, then accept the Terms & Conditions of the Challenge to confirm your entry.

Once a profile or entry has been deleted, the data cannot be recovered. However, you can recreate your profile using the same email address, if you wish.

Make sure you have filled out all the required fields before clicking “Submit.”

All the required fields must be filled out. We also recommend you fill out the optional fields to increase your chances of winning.

You can edit your entry right up until the deadline. To do that, click the “Edit” button at the top right on the “Enter” page.

You can do this on the “Enter” page, when you’re filling out or editing your entry form.

Click the red “Delete my entry” link at the bottom of the form. A pop-up will ask whether you’re sure you want to delete your entry. You can then confirm you want to delete your entry or cancel your deletion request.

In the “Enter space,” click the “Preview” button at the bottom right of the window.

All projects must be submitted between the Challenge start date and the deadline, as described in the Challenge rules.

Once the deadline has passed, you cannot edit your project.

You can submit your project at any time. We recommend you do so as soon as possible. If necessary, you can update your project before the deadline.

You can upload and store files there. Only you can see them. You may find the workspace useful when preparing your application.

You are the only person who can access documents uploaded to your workspace.

If you want to make a document visible (business plan, team organization chart, company logo, etc.), as suggested in the questionnaire, you must upload them at the appropriate point in the questionnaire.

The deadline is specified in the Challenge rules. You must register at the website before you can submit your project.

You have five (5) weeks to submit your application after the Challenge opens.

You can only submit one project.

A project may only be submitted by one person or by that person’s representatives.

Only one person can submit an application on behalf of a team.

You will be informed of the Challenge stages by email. A message will also be posted in your entry space.

You will receive an email informing you if you make it through to the Top 100 in your country and your name will be published on the Top 100 page, which will be added as the Challenge moves forward.

If you make it through to the Top 15, i.e., the finalists, your name will be published on the Top 15 page. You will also be contacted by the Challenge manager in your country. They will provide you with the information you need for the following stage, i.e. the pitch to the jury.

You can take part if you have an idea for a business, even if you have not created a company yet. The Challenge is open to anyone who plans to start a company or runs one set up in the last two years, as of the day applications open.

The Challenge is open to any idea or start-up, in any business sector, when the idea or start-up has a positive impact in the country of the Challenge.

Each application is assessed using three key criteria:
1. Social/community impact: The ability to create sustainable value and contribute to the development of local communities (job creation, substituting imports, improved education and standards of living, etc.).
2. Innovative nature: The extent to which you provide new technological or other solutions that help resolve your country’s difficulties. Innovation doesn’t necessarily involve “revolution.” It may be incremental, i.e. improve the existing situation, or radical, i.e. produce root-and-branch change.
3. Feasibility and growth potential: The Challenge seeks to support all types of organization, from projects that are not yet fully formed to start-ups that are less than two years old. But it is important for the organizer that the idea or the start-up can grow and positively impact more and more people.

We believe that social entrepreneurs can create sustainable value and contribute to the development of local communities (job creation, substituting imports, improved education and standard of living, etc.). They are able to identify needs that are unmet or poorly met and fulfill them through preventive, corrective or compensatory actions. The company’s social purpose may concern a specific category of people or society at large in your country.

Social entrepreneurs must also be able to measure the real usefulness of their project and demonstrate its impacts and/or outcomes for the environment and/or the community.

We use the moderation stage before your application is posted on the website to check that it is consistent with the rules and Total’s values. Once approved, your application will appear on the website with the short description you provide in the questionnaire (Question B7).


During the initial selection stage, each application will be given an overall score, which includes the automatic score from the questionnaire (90%) and the public vote (“Share for Likes,” 10%). In this way, the top 100 applications will be selected automatically in each country.

The second selection stage will be performed by social entrepreneurship professionals. The selection criteria remain the same. Fifteen (15) finalists will be shortlisted to pitch to the jury, which will pick the three (3) overall winners.

Complete applications meeting the eligibility criteria will be submitted to a public vote (“Share for Likes”) based on a short description posted on the local Startupper of the Year by Total Challenge website. The short description is the one you provide in the questionnaire (Question B7).

To share your project, the organizing team will email you a post containing a link to the description of your project on the “Share for Likes” page of the Challenge website. Followers and visitors will then be able to like your project, and two others, based on the descriptions posted on the local website.

Only the votes submitted on the “Share for Likes” page of the website will count.

You will have two (2) weeks to share your project with your network during the “Share for Likes” stage.


Only your first and last names, the project name and the short description provided in the questionnaire will be visible. We recommend that you do not enter confidential information in Question B7, which will be made public for the Challenge.

If you make it through to the Top 15, well done! You will have 10 minutes to pitch your project, and another 10-minute question-and-answer session with the jury. Country managers will contact finalists directly to give them with travel and other information for day they will pitch.

You must submit your application in one of the languages offered on the Challenge website in your country.

The Challenge is open to anyone aged thirty-five (35) or under on the day that it opens for submission of applications.

The Challenge is open to anyone who plans to start up a company or runs a company set up within the last two (2) years on the day that it opens for submission of applications.

No administrative documents are required when you submit your application.

If you are selected as a finalist, you will have to provide an official identity document when you pitch, along with the registration document for your company if your country requires one.

No. The Challenge is organized by Total to promote the development of local initiatives. You must therefore be a citizen of the country in which you submit your application.

You can take part in the Challenge in your home country even if you don’t live there, provided your project benefits that country. Please see the list of countries that have their own Challenge website.

If you are a minor, you must first obtain permission from your parents, the person(s) who has/have parental authority or your guardian(s) to participate in the Challenge. They must guarantee that you will abide by the provisions of the rules on the local Challenge website.

Applicants who competed in the first Startupper of the Year by Total Challenge in 2015-2016 may enter again. The sole exception is the three (3) winners from each country, who may not.

The three winners will receive personalized coaching, publicity and a monetary prize.

The monetary prize will be split as follows: 50% of the total amount for the first prize winner, 30% for the second prize winner, and 20% for the third prize winner.

Yes. The Top Female Entrepreneur Award is a separate award, but can be given to the overall winner of the Challenge. The project may or may not be one of the three overall winners. During the pitch phase, the jury will select one project from the 15 finalists in which at least one of the founders is a woman and award her the Top Female Entrepreneur Award. The award does not come with a monetary prize. It aims to help women get their start-ups off the ground by publicizing them and boosting their networking opportunities.

Total reserves the right to present the Start-Up for Better Energy Award to one or more finalists whose projects are related directly to its business. They may then be put in touch with teams at Total to create potential partnerships.

This is a separate award. It may be given to the overall winner and does not come with a monetary prize.

Juries will be appointed in accordance with Total’s compliance policy and its Code of Conduct.

The juries will meet for pitches by the finalists and for the final selection of the three winners, on the dates indicated in the rules of the Challenge.

Only a short description of the applicants’ projects will be available. This will be written by the applicant with the aim of providing a concise summary of their projects and innovation capacity.
